The fortress island of Örö has been close to the public for over a hundred years, but has now been opened up for travel. The island is part of the Archipelago National Park and you can get to know its unique nature by hiking along its many nature paths. There is about 20 km of trails on the island. The island is said to have the widest variety of species in Finland. Around 1600 different varieties of butterflies are found on the island along with several rare plants. The history of the island is visible in its cobble stone road built by chinese war prisoners, barracks dating back to tsar times, bunkers and old canons.
